Top 10 Movies of 2015
This list is super late, I know. I’d tell you why but you don’t care. 2015 saw a year where good movies came from all over the place and only two comic related movies made it onto the list, so that’s pretty good these days. Before we start, we’re going off UK release dates, so one or two movies might have been out in 2014 in your country but during 2015 here.
Quick honorable mention to Kingsman: The Secret Service. Hell of a fun movie with some of the most brutal, fast paced and best directed action scenes of the year. Sadly, it didn’t make the cut but it should be noted anyway. Now onto the list!
10. Ex Machina
Ex Machina is darkly interesting and well-cast. You might be sick of movies that tell us that robots are going to be too much for us to handle one day but it was great to see that from the ground up, in a pretty wonderful film that isn’t just a crazy blockbuster with robots taking over and/or destroying the world.
9. John Wick
What a sleek and satisfying ride. John Wick is a lot of fun and features the best motivation to kill the bad guy ever. Well directed and filled with some of the coolest and brutal fights scenes I’ve seen for years, John Wick is not a movie I’ll soon forget.
8. The Gift
The Gift is an intelligent, dark movie that nicely lets you solve the puzzle along with it. Good performances and one of those endings that leaves it wide open, The Gift is a freaky thriller that should not be looked past.
7. Ant-Man
The most visually interesting and visually funny movie of the year. Ant-Man has a charming cast and is surprisingly good for a movie based on the character. Just think about that. Ant. Man. It presented the hero in a smarter way that didn’t take itself too seriously and it opened the door for more of Marvel’s obscure comic characters. Throg movie, here we come...No?
6. Jurassic World
Exactly what it said on the tin. It might be stupid and full of cliché characters but fuck me if I didn’t enjoy the hell out of this movie. I like dinosaurs and I like dinosaurs fighting each other, it’s what I wanted and it’s what I got. Jurassic World is the most honest movie of the year. Fuck yeah, dinosaurs!
5. Avengers: Age of Ultron
Age of Ultron is full of stupid decisions but packed with awesome action, funny banter and The Vision. Yes, The Vision is enough reason to see this movie alone, never mind the stupid super destruction, James Spader as Ultron and the fact the Hulkbuster rocks up.
4. The Final Girls
What a sweet movie about a summer camp slasher. A wonderful comedy about taking the piss out of the slasher genre while also having a heart and some interesting ideas. Some of the jokes are a little obvious but the originality and all-out fun out weight the issues. The Final Girls is one of the biggest surprises of the year!
3. Krampus
Trick ‘r Treat was a fantastic movie and Michael Dougherty‘s anticipated next movie did not disappoint. Awesome puppet effects, Toni Colette and a movie not afraid to make a generally twisted Christmas story make up the best Xmas creature feature since Gremlins! Not that there’s much to compare it to.
2. Crimson Peak
I’m a sucker for Guillermo del Toro and his dark ways. Crimson Peak delivers on some of the things that make Del Toro’s older movies so good, it has some of the most cringe-inducing and brutal deaths of the year and probably the most gorgeous sets of the year. I could talk about how beautiful this movie is and how good Jessica Chastain is for weeks. Crimson Peak doesn’t hit every nail on the head (For instance, they hired Charlie Hunnam) but when the nail does hit, it hits hard.
1. It Follows
No surprise to anyone who knows me, It Follows was my jam. This movie is a total brain worm with crazy ideas and a pretty scary premise. It Follows is unnerving and generally and mentally scary as fuck. Good cast of young actors and a very fresh take on the old slasher movies. With a mesmerizing soundtrack and the most “Holy fuck, no!” moment of the year.
So there it is and yes, I thought Mad Max was awesome too, it just didn’t get a spot on the list for whatever reason. You’re probably sick of seeing it as number one anyway and what hasn’t been said about it. I would like to say that I think 2015 was a pretty good year for movies, of course there’s always plenty of shit to avoid but I think there’s been a lot to celebrate. Congrats 2015, you had some awesome horror movies.
