Top 10 Movies of 2016
Another year, another mass amount of movies. Some great, some awful. Let's look at my personal favorites. These are just from my personal opinion and just because I enjoyed one more than the other doesn't necessarily mean I think it's a superior movie, I just enjoyed it more. We're also going off UK release time.
10. The Nice Guys
Wonderfully blunt and well acted, if not for a slightly too excited Ryan Gosling. The Nice Guys is honestly just a lot of fun and easily likeable. The script and setting are wonderful and the crazy situations keep you hooked. Very overlooked in my opinion.
9. Don't Breathe
Harsh and butt clenching, Don't Breathe pulls no punches and that one cringy moment that makes you shiver every time you think about it. Anytime you spend not actually breathing with the characters is spent shitting yourself with the characters.
8. The Revenant
People had problems with the length and repetitive scenery shots but personally, I thought it was beautiful, very entertaining and epic. It's a great, horrible tale that gives you a front row seat to the main character's nightmare... if you can handle it.
7. The Neon Demon
The Neon Demon couldn't be a better example of style over substance. The acting has poor moments and the story kind of loses itself halfway through but it is gorgeous and mesmerizing and a really weird performance from Jena Malone saves the day. The soundtrack is also wonderful and I totally love the colours and style. A spiritual successor to the horror classic: Suspiria.
6. Shin Gojira
Japan's return to the world of Godzilla has a pretty mixed up first act but what follows is some of the best Godzilla footage you can find. Epic, devastating and weirdly creepy. The new Godzilla is a step in the right direction with a very interesting ending.
5. The Witch
A mostly well-acted family drama that happens to involve a pretty scary witch. It looks good, it's tense and it's a strong slow burner. The first scene alone will separate the audience and it's certainly for a particular crowd but that crowd should love it.
4. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Instead of J. J. Abrams unnecessary "Flair" we welcome back the classic big bold shots and strong looming atmosphere thanks to director Gareth Edwards. The characters are colorful and fun if not a little underdeveloped but it's a cool open and closed Star Wars story that I really, really enjoyed.
3. Hush
The fact Hush never got a wide cinema release is a criminal offence, it's the best home invasion movie in forever. It's so well focused and the main character's handicap really freshens the genera up, somehow. There's something about Hush, I just love it.
2. Captain America: Civil War
The Captain America movies are some of the strongest in the entire MCU and Civil War does not disappoint. It is the movie where you finally realise how silly everyone looks but it's still got awesome action, awesome new heroes and big epic fights, it simply stamps out The Avenger movies.
1. 10 Cloverfield Lane
As soon as I was asking myself where the hell the sequel to Cloverfield was, the movie was here. The cool thing about going to see a movie that had only been advertised for a few weeks before its release is that I didn't know what I was really seeing but what I saw blew me away. 10 Cloverfield Lane is a seriously tense movie with a fantastic performance from John Goodman. It's the best non Alien homage to Alien ever. It's not a very relevant sequel but it still manages to be miles better than the original, which I'm actually a big fan of. Sometimes a movie just wins me over and 10 Cloverfield Lane did that with ease.
So there are my favorite movies of the year, do you agree or do you think I'm a fucking lunatic? Here's to another year of hopefully great movies.
